The Plastic Waste Management Program, Ghana is threatening to sue government for the release of monies accrued into the waste management fund between 2011 and 2016.

The 10% Environmental Tax introduced in 2011 was imposed on imported plastic raw materials, to help deal with the plastic waste menace in the country.

According to the Program Director for the plastic waste management program Quaranchie Adama-Tettey” government is reluctant to release the funds and so we would go to court and compel government “.

Unable to confirm when the group would file its suit, he said various attempts by stakeholders including recycling companies and plastic waste collectors to encourage government to secure the funds have proven futile.

“The monies are expected to be used to ensure sustainable financing of the industry and expand the scope of recycling “, Adama-Tettey charged.

The Ministry of Finance has hinted in the past that it expects the required legal regulations and documents on disbursement modalities for the waste management fund to be completed before close of 2016.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Kumasi Waste Management, Plastic Waste Management Association, Zoomlion, Environmental Services Providers Association, among others are expected to be beneficiaries of the fund.
