The staggering number of deaths is the result of medical personnel in the Marsabit and Baringo counties of the country being taken by surprise by the sudden outbreak.
According to the Daily Nation, the victims were mostly children.

According to the head of the head of the country's Malaria Control Unit, Dr Waqo Ejersa, the affected communities had not experienced malaria outbreaks for a long time and had thus developed low immunity to the disease.
