Kenya has a malaria problem

Parts of the country have recorded hundred of cases

Reports from parts of Kenya indicate that over 30 people have died in the past week from malaria.

The staggering number of deaths is the result of medical personnel in the Marsabit and Baringo counties of the country being taken by surprise by the sudden outbreak.

According to the Daily Nation, the victims were mostly children.

Kenya continues to struggle with intermittent outbreaks of malaria that kills hundred with the worst incident in recent memory occurring in 2002 when over 300 died and thousands were infected.

The country's health ministry has responded by sending mosquito nets and other supplies to the affected areas but an ongoing strike by nurses across the country seems to have affected the speed with which treatment is being applied.

According to the head of the head of the country's Malaria Control Unit, Dr Waqo Ejersa, the affected communities had not experienced malaria outbreaks for a long time and had thus developed low immunity to the disease.
