Established in 1995, the Bat Centre is Durban's largest and most innovative community arts centre. Administrated by the Bartel Arts Trust.

A charitable trust established by the late Hugo Bartel, the centre supports the development of a vibrant artistic practice which celebrates KwaZulu-Natal's rich cultural diversity.

Bat aims to build respect for local artists and their role in society an provides the public with access to a range of arts-related activities and the opportunity to meet local artists face to face.

Natural Science Museum

The gallery has a fine collection of national and international artworks in all media. The focus is on contemporary South African artwork. Opening hours are between 8:30 a.m and 4p.m from Monday to Saturday, and 11a.m - 4pm on Sundays and public holidays. Closed Christmas Day and Good Friday.

City Hall

The building was completed in 1910. It was designed by architect Stanley Hudson, whose work was inspired by the city hall in Belfast . Amongst other things , the buildings house the city hall, municipal offices, library, Natural History Museum and art gallery.

A general garden tour with a focus on indigenous and historical facts of the Durban Botanic Gardens will be given by an experienced and specially trained guide.

Umgeni River Park Trail

The Umgeni river rises in the Umgeni Vlei near Impendle, west of Pietermaritzburg, and is fed by a catchment of 4400 square kilometers. The vlei itself comprises some 4000 hectares. Water from its catchment provides water to 45% of the provinces population. Due to the soil types and land management practises in the area, the water is of a high quality. The Umgeni river estuary is the largest estuary in the greater Durban area. One of the interesting habitats of the estuary is the beachwood mangrove swamp.

uShaka Marine World
