Residents living in fear as suspected robbers besiege communities

According to the police, three suspected armed robbers were recently attacked by a mob and later died at the Nadowli Hospital.

The Deputy Upper West Region police commander, ACP Edward Oduro Kwarteng, told the media in Wa on Thursday that in one of the incidents, the suspected robbers engaged the police in a shootout, leading to the death of one of the armed men.

He said that four others who escaped into the bush were subsequently arrested.

ACP Edward Oduro Kwarteng said there was another incident in which two suspected robbers also attacked some students at the Sisters Hostel of the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) and attempted to rob them of their laptops, mobile phones, and other belongings.

One of the suspects was later identified and arrested, the Police Commander said.

He further narrated another incident at the Jonga- Sambo road in the Wa municipality, where some armed men had blocked the road and were harassing road users.

ACP Oduro Kwarteng said the team proceeded to the scene and met one Abdul Moomm Abubakar emerging from the nearby bush with a single barrel gun.

The suspect attempted to shoot at the police when he saw them, but the police acted quickly and shot him first in the thigh.

He is currently receiving treatment at the Upper West regional hospital.

Meanwhile, the Upper West police command has asked the public to alert the police with any information they have about criminals in their communities to enable the police to arrest them.
