Return to work or forfeit your August salary – Haruna Iddrisu tells CLOGSAG

Haruna Iddrisu explained that this directive is because the National Labour Commission (NLC) has declared the on-going strike illegal.

Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Haruna Iddrisu has asked striking members of Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) to return to work or risk losing their August salaries.

"All CLOGSAG workers are to return to work or forfeit their salaries for the month of August as the strike declared by the NLC is illegal and we have encouraged the leadership of the CLOGSAG workers union to engage the subcommittee which is working on the market premium.”

he added.

He further revealed that he will be meeting with the head of the civil service to decide who to pay at the end of the month. This will be after a roll call which will indicate who reported to work and who did not.

Members of CLOGSAG have been on strike over the last few weeks demanding the payment of market premium before they return to work.

However, the NLC described the strike as illegal saying the association failed to inform the NLC of their strike before starting it.

Executive Secretary of the Commission Charles Bawa-Duah said "Our records show that CLOGSAG failed to comply with this clear provision of the law and for that matter, the Commission in the exercise of the powers conferred on it by Section 139 of the Act notified CLOGSAG that the strike was illegal and subsequently ordered them to immediately call it off and go back to work.”

He also added that the NLC will do its best to resolve the issue. The Commission is expected to meet both the Ministry and the leadership of CLOGSAG on Wednesday (August 10,2016).
