Galen Rupp will be heading to a third consecutive Olympic Games after securing victory in the United States team trials marathon in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Rupp, who won the silver medal for the 10,000 meters at the 2012 London Olympics, placed first with a time of two hours, 11 minutes and 12 seconds in his marathon debut.

The 29-year-old's achievement meant he became the second American to win an Olympic trial in his first marathon after George Young secured victory in 1968 with a time of 2:30:48.

Three-time Olympian Meb Keflezighi finished in second just over a minute later with a time of 2:12:20.

Jared Ward, the top USA finisher in last year’s Los Angeles marathon, claimed the third and final spot on the men's team with a time of 2:13:00.

In the USA Olympic women's trials, Amy Gragg was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 2:28:20.

She was followed by Desiree Linden and Shalane Flanagan, who finished with times of 2:28:54 and 2:29:19 respectively.

More than 370 runners competed in the Olympic team trials marathon, which was hosted in Los Angeles for the first time.
