Big Little Lies season two will premiere on June 9 on HBO. The new season will feature the core actresses from last season, as well as a new addition in Meryl Streep. The Oscar-winning actress will play Mary Louise Wright, t he mother-in-law of Nicole Kidman's character.

Big Little Lies season one was a roaring success, and when it was announced that the show was returning for a second season, fans wondered how the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning series would be able to top itself. (And also, how the new season would take shape without Liane Moriarty's source material to work from.) We still don't know what Big Little Lies season two will be like, but the creators of the HBO series definitely did not disappoint in the casting department, tapping none other than Meryl Streep to play a role.

What role will Meryl Streep play on Big Little Lies season 2?

Streep will play Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgrd). As you probably remember, Perry died on the last episode of season one after being pushed down the stairs by Bonnie Carlson (Zo Kravitz). Bonnie and the rest of the Monterey ladies had just found out that Perry was physically abusing his wife Celeste (Nicole Kidman), and that he had raped Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley) and fathered her child.

Streep's Mary Louise is looking for answers about her son's death. "My son is dead, and I want answers....you were planning to leave him, and you learned of his infidelity just ten seconds before he died," she says to Celeste at one point in the trailer.

In addition, it seems like Streep's Mary Louise will get into a battle of sorts with Madeline Martha MacKenzie (Reese Witherspoon), as this hilarious photo from the set shows Witherspoon hurling an ice cream cone at Streep's head.
