"After my teen years and early twenties of sleeping in my makeup and occasionally using a Sharpie as eyeliner (DO NOT DO IT), I felt like I needed to start being nicer to my skin," Taylor told Elle. (Editor's note: We're happy she appears to be aware that this isn't a healthy thing to do!)
I have so many questions. Like, when exactly was she sporting the permanent marker instead of actual eyeliner...how did I not notice? And why, oh why, would a multimillionaire-one with a committed makeup artist-resort to this nonsense? Did she find herself liner-less during a sudden autograph session and decide, hmm, why the heck not?
And most important: Is she a genius or, well, a walking (read: strutting) safety hazard?
Turns out, Sharpie doesn't specify any protocol on their website in regard to using their markers as makeup. (Surprise!) But they do note that "while Sharpie markers are AP-certified non-toxic, we do not recommend using them on areas of items that may come in contact with food or the mouth...Sharpie should not be used anywhere where a consumer could possibly ingest the ink."
Our eyes aren't our mouths, of course, but one must assume that any chemicals that shouldn't be ingested (Sharpies contain dyes, propanol, butanol, and diacetone alcohol, per the National Institutes of Health , or NIH) also shouldn't come into contact with our EYES. In regard to eye contact, the NIH says the product "is considered safe under normal use conditions." Not sure about you, but I don't think lining your eyes in considering normal use for a permanent marker.
"I would steer clear of the Sharpie," says WH advisory board member Mona Gohara, M.D., a dermatologist in NYC. "There are so many cosmetically elegant eyeliners out there-you can get the look without it."
\"I would steer clear of the Sharpie,\" says WH advisor Mona Gohara, M.D., a dermatologist in NYC.
The good news is Taylor no longer relies on Sharpie ink on her iconic eyes, and she's taken her beauty routine up a notch: "I now moisturize my face every night and put on body lotion after I shower, not just in the winter, but all year round, because, why cant I be soft during all the seasons?!"

Here's hoping she hasn't used red pen to color in those famous lips. Now that would create quite the Reputation...
