The YotaPhone 2 was one of the most pleasant smartphone surprises last year, combining an OLED display in front with an E Ink panel on the back to make a uniquely versatile Android device.
The surprising thing about this phone was how well it worked, and how it managed to steer away from being a simple gimmick. Today its getting even better with a couple of major changes.
Chief among these changes is the significant price cut: The YotaPhone 2 now costs £440 in the UK, down from £555, or €599 in the rest of Europe, down from €699.
The company says the Android lollipop not only improves the phones performance, but also helps make the camera better. This is very good, with the YETI (Yota E Ink Technology Integration) software which is composed of the apps you can run on the E Ink screen on the back of the phone.
Among these apps are Instagram, Facebook and Twitter widgets, which will periodically refresh and give glanceable updates that don’t require putting on the phone.
A white option for the YotaPhone 2 also launched yesterday. It is mostly similar to the black one, and costs the same as well, but it inverts the color scheme on the E Ink screen to properly match the phones new look.
The front of the white version remains black, which the company chose so as to keep a cleaner appearance on the front and also because Yota liked the contrast of colors better.
