Super Rugby side Sharks are in talks with the city of Durban over the possibility of playing home matches at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The Sharks currently play home matches at the adjacent Kings Park Stadium, but discussions are underway over a move to the Moses Mabhida Stadium as early as 2017.
The venue was used for the 2010 football World Cup, and has a capacity of 56,000 that can be scaled up to 85,000 for major events.
A statement from Sharks chief executive John Smit read: "We enjoy an excellent relationship with officials from the eThekwini Municipality, and we are enthusiastic about their vision for the future of our city.
"We are excited about the prospects at Moses Mabhida Stadium, but have made it clear that any move would have to be in the best interests of the Sharks and its supporters.
"Before the Sharks board makes a final decision, we will conduct detailed consultations with important stakeholders like our sponsors, suiteholders and season ticket holders. This process will continue over the next few weeks.
"The city has given its full support to this position, and is looking forward to working with the Sharks in the future.
"We have been inspired by the eThekwini leadership's commitment and professionalism, and are excited about the opportunities."
