This question surprises many parents, but yes, a girl can get pregnant even before she starts menstruating. Let’s understand how.

When a girl begins to grow, her body starts changing because of special hormones. These changes include breast growth, changes in body shape, and the development of eggs in the ovaries. Pregnancy happens when one of these eggs meets a man’s sperm. What many people don’t know is that the first egg can be released before the first period. This means that if a girl has sex before her first menstruation, that egg can be fertilised, leading to pregnancy.

Vaginal odour after menstruation can be treated

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), many girls between 10 and 14 years around the world get pregnant every year because they didn’t know this could happen. The UNFPA Ghana (United Nations Population Fund) reports that teenage pregnancies are still a major problem in Ghana. In 2023 alone, over 100,000 girls under 19 years got pregnant, and some were as young as 10 or 11.

The youngest confirmed mother in the world was a girl from Peru, South America, named Lina Medina, who gave birth at just five (5) years old in 1939. Her story shocked the world and still reminds doctors and parents how early puberty and pregnancy can happen.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has also shown that many girls drop out of school because of early pregnancy. Some never return. The UNFPA Ghana warns that “every young girl deserves to dream, not to deliver.” This means girls should focus on their education, health, and future, not early motherhood.

That is why it’s so important for young people to learn about their bodies early. As UNFPA Ghana says, “Knowledge protects. Silence harms.” Parents, teachers, and health workers must talk openly about these issues. When young girls understand how their bodies work, they can make safer, wiser decisions.

The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) was established by an Act of Parliament (Act 978 as amended) as a sovereign wealth fund. MIIF, which receives and invests royalties paid by mining companies and dividends from the Government of Ghana’s free carried interest, mainly into the mining sector, also has an overarching mandate to help develop the sector and increase Ghanaian interests across the entire mining eco-system.The mandate includes the positioning of MIIF as a co-investment anchor, aligning investments to the industrial objectives of the country, such as investing in mining value addition, capacity building, promoting local content, and the development of the capital markets with mining as the pivot.

<h2>Growth trajectory and record profits</h2>

MIIF recorded an impressive increase in revenue from GH¢402 million in 2023 to GH¢1.6 billion in 2024 as it posted record profits of GH¢1.905 billion at the end of 2024, which is more than 300% increment over the 2023 financial year (ref: MIIF 2024 signed audited financials).Between the period 2021 to 2024, following the appointment of Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, MIIF went through one of the most transformative phases of any state-owned enterprise in Ghana, becoming a point of reference for resource management globally and in Africa.During this period, MIIF a hitherto unknown entity positioned itself to be the Ghanaian anchor in increasing ownership in our mining assets, the development of far-reaching programs such as the small-scale mining incubation program(SSMIP) to help formalise the small scale mining sector, the MIIF gold trade program to complement the gold for oil and gold for forex programs, the women in mining scholarship scheme, strategic investments in various minerals and the development of Ghana’s first gold-backed Enterprise Traded Fund (ETF) which was to be listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange in 2025.

As a financial institution, MIIF clearly outperforms all apart from Ecobank and GCB in terms of profits and is probably the best performing state-owned organisation in Ghana.\

<h2>MIIF Growth factors</h2>

<h3>Sound surplus cash management and expansion of the royalty base</h3>

MIIF’s presentations to the Finance Committee of Parliament over the period projected a strategic expansion of the royalty base and good cash management. The&nbsp; management of MIIF, put into motion a good surplus cash investment system and strategically expanded its royalty base.MIIF’s expansion of the mineral’s royalty base through interagency agreements with GRA, EOCO, GSA and MINCOM and deliberate targeting of hitherto royalty non-paying minerals such as medium scale gold, limestone, sand winning and salt, expanded the royalty base leading to an increase in revenue.

<h2>The MIIF Gold Trade Program</h2>

MIIF with the support of the Government of Ghana started its gold trading program under two main lines in 2023 – The Gold for Forex Program and the Gold for Oil. The trade&nbsp; is said to have attracted a total inflow of circa US$1.1 billion dollars between August 2023, and December 2024, from the export of 470,056.61 ounces of gold through a revolving cedi equivalent trade line of $30 million from MIIF and injections from CBOD of an average Ghs50 Million a month leading to MIIF providing US$706 million to CBOD to support the payment of fuel imports into Ghana.This helped stabilise the cedi and ensured the availability of fuel at the pumps. Despite a reported forex loss affecting about 7.5% of the total trade portfolio, an analysis of the MIIF 2024 financials reveals that MIIF registered a profit on its trade program of about GHs 36 million.

<h2>Strategic Equity Investments</h2>

In line with the objective of increasing Ghana’s equity interests in mining assets, MIIF invested $40 million in Asante Gold Corporation of Canada between 2022 and 2021. Asante Gold owns the Kubi and the producing Chirano (formerly Kinross Mine of Canada) and Bibiani gold mines.This investment which included a condition for Asante to list on the Ghana Stock Exchage increased Ghanaian interest to circa 40 per cent, making it the only large-scale international gold mine with significant Ghanaian interest since the divestiture implementation program in the 1980’s.The Fund, through its investment in the UK and Australian listed Atlantic Lithium, is now the third largest shareholder in Atlantic Lithium globally. MIIF has not completed the investment in Atlantic Lithium’s seven Ghana tenements which includes the prolific Ewoyaa mine as this is subject to parliamentary ratification of the lease.Upon ratification by Parliament, Ghana’s stake in Ewoyaa and the local tenements will increase to 19%. In line with this Agreement as negotiated by MIIF and MINCOM in 2023, Ghana increased its carried interest from 10% to 13%, royalties from 5% to 10%, a compulsory listing of Atlantic Lithium on the Ghana Stock Exchange, a community development fund to support the local community with 1% of gross revenue, the development of feldspar which is a by-product of lithium used for ceramics and fibreglass, the processing of the lithium and the insistence on local content as a job creation driver.MIIF’s investment in the Ada Songhor industrial salt project through Electrochem Ghana makes it poised to be Africa’s largest industrial salt project ahead of Walvis Bay’s 16,700 acres in Namibia. Salt which has approximately 14,000 industrial uses is one of the most important minerals.The investment which is part of an ongoing Songhor salt development plan has seen the employment of over 1,200 people, the re-start of exports and the potential to export 1 million metric tonnes to Nigeria alone per annum.Electrochem which is also compelled by MIIF to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange, provides an array of possibilities for industrial development in the Ada area stemming from caustic soda, pharmaceuticals, textiles etc.MIIF’s 2024 investment pipeline as presented to Parliament and to the Transition Committee included investments in Newcore Gold at Enchi and Azumah Resources under a joint mandate with Engineers and Planners of Ghana.

<h2>Assets Under Management (AUM) 1000% Increment&nbsp;</h2>

MIIF has over the past four years increased its Assets under Managment (AUM) from US$125 Million in 2020 to circa US$900 Million in 2024 which is to further increase to circa US$1.7 Billion subject to completion of the valuation of Government of Ghana’s free carried interest which began in 2024.

MIIF is well-positioned to shape the future of Ghana’s mineral economy and to complement the strategic efforts of entities like GIADEC and Goldbod.As Honourable Adongo remarked in 2022 when Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng presented the vision and strategy of MIIF to the Finance Committee of Parliament at the Labadi Beach Hotel, “MIIF is a colossus and a sleeping giant which must be supported to grow”. The Management of Regimanuel Gray Limited has made a committed promise and assurance to all of its stakeholders, comprising customers, cherished clients, partners, among others, that it would use all legal means available to protect their peace and sanity from all manner of danger from all quarters.This was made known in an official statement which states, “Regimanuel Gray would like to re-assure all of its cherished stakeholders that as a law-abiding entity, it will take every step within the law to resolve the issues arising. It further assures its valued residents and homeowners to remain resolute and fortified in the values of the company”. The statement and assurance from the estate company was in reaction to an Accra High Court order which set aside a writ of possession issued to the Numo Kofi Anum family and further stayed the execution of their judgement dated March, 2024.

In a ruling delivered by His Lordship Kenneth Edem Kudjordjie, J. on 13th August, 2025, the Judge stated categorically that, “one can deduce that the aim of law is not to cause confusion but to ensure peace and stability in civil society. The Courts exists to uphold the law to the extent that a judgment or order which emanated from the Court is to ensure clarity, certainty, peace and to champion the ideals of justice. “So that, if a judgment has been delivered and the enforcement of the judgment does not champion the ideals of justice, but creates confusion, an application to the Court will invoke its discretionary jurisdiction to make orders which may appear to be just. See order 43 rule 11."

The judge continued, “This application centred on matters which occurred after the judgment, various evidence as exemplified by exhibits annexed to the application of the applicants clearly depicts properties and attacks on persons creating mayhem in the estate the applicants. The fact that judgment has been awarded in favour of the Judgment Debtor does not give him/her the licence to go into execution except by leave of the Court. To ensure that enforcement of the judgment accords with the notion of justice, Order 43 rule (3) mandates that the occupiers of the lands subject to the enforcement of the judgment shall be given notice before leave is granted for possession of the immovable property.”

This was after an application for same was made by Regimanuel Gray Limited and some affected third parties. Other applications filed by Regimanuel Gray in the Supreme Court are yet to be determined. The court in its ruling of 13th August noted the chaotic conduct of the Kofi Anum Family along with their agents, contractors and assigns in the purported execution of the Writ of possession over the fully developed Regimanuel Gray Estate at East Airport between June and August 2025. The berserk and uncouth manner of the family in pursuit of a supposedly peaceful order coupled with the extra judicial acts perpetrated against Regimanuel Gray Limited and the 3rd parties who are innocent purchasers for value without notice were recounted to the court. The court noted that the Numo Kofi Anum family of Tesa acted outside the remit of the court order by proceeding to demolish property belonging to Regimanuel Gray and third parties. The Kofi Anum family also went beyond the subject matter of their judgement to attack and occupy properties that were not covered by their judgement. The act of terrorising and assaulting residents was even below the bar of civility. Despite the delay, Justice will ultimately be served and those responsible will be accountable. Patience and perseverance are often necessary when seeking justice or resolution. Fawan’s paper, titled “Examining Factors Affecting Sustainable Performance of Building Construction Projects in Ghana Using Structural Equation Modelling”, explores critical issues affecting sustainability in the construction industry.

The study highlights the increasing criticism of the construction sector for its harmful environmental effects and the limited adoption of sustainability concepts in Ghana’s building projects. Most projects in the country primarily focus on reducing environmental impacts, often neglecting social and economic sustainability.

The research, which adopts a life cycle perspective, evaluates the environmental, economic, and social impacts of building construction projects. To achieve this, the study:

Reviewed extensive literature to identify relevant indicators.Conducted surveys using shared questionnaires, collecting 420 valid responses from experts.Employed structural equation modelling (SEM) to analyse relationships between the indicators.

The findings revealed that environmental impact is the most critical factor when considering sustainable performance in Ghana’s construction sector, followed by social and economic impacts. The operation phase of buildings showed the strongest influence on sustainability, while the demolition phase had the weakest, although all phases were found to have statistically significant relationships with sustainability.

The paper asserts that there were no conflicts of interest among the authors. Additionally, the data supporting the study’s findings are available upon reasonable request from the corresponding author, Fawan Issah Iddi.

Fawan’s achievement not only marks a personal triumph but also sets a precedent for other Ghanaian researchers aspiring to make their mark in the global academic community. His work adds valuable insights to the discourse on sustainability in construction, particularly within the Ghanaian context.

According to psychology, this phenomenon is called Communal Narcissism.

“Communal narcissism is a form of maladaptive narcissism. As the name suggests, it refers to inflated perceptions of oneself within a broader social context,” says Dr Patrice Le Goy, an acclaimed psychologist.

The concept of communal narcissism gained traction after a study on the subject was published in 2018 in the Journal of Research in Personality.

The study noted, “These findings support the notion that communal narcissism may represent an effort to gain favourable appraisals from others in the absence of a genuine communal self-view.”

In other words, a communal narcissist derives self-esteem by imagining how others perceive them for their contributions.

“Communal narcissism is defined by the same sense of entitlement and grandiosity that we associate with traditional narcissism,” explains Dr Le Goy. “The main difference is that a communal narcissist seeks validation outside of themselves to affirm their worth.”

The outcome of these actions, says Dr Le Goy, is that communal narcissists can be seen as altruistic individuals who are committed to helping others, reaping the associated praise.

There are, however, situations that allow us to peer beyond the veil of societal pretence and narcissism to reveal people’s true nature.

If you want to test a person’s character, present them with a crisis that casts them in a starring role. A new study reveals a sharp rise in deaths from the disease since the Covid pandemic, with nearly a 50 per cent increase in cases since 2013. Data from Cancer Research UK shows that head and neck cancer rates have surged by over a third since the early 90s, with women aged 25 to 49 experiencing a 60 per cent increase from 1993 to 2019, and men seeing a 34 per cent rise.

The main causes of these cancers include smoking, alcohol, and the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV). The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) and the University of Sheffield analysed data, noting that head and neck cancer diagnoses in England rose from 10,735 cases in 2019 to 12,400 cases by 2021. Deaths increased from 3,213 to 3,469 in the same period.

Oropharyngeal cancer, which affects the throat, tonsils, and back of the tongue, is a major contributor to the rising numbers, with cases up by 47 per cent since 2013. HPV, often transmitted through oral sex, is responsible for around 70 per cent of throat cancer cases. Dr Hisham Mehanna of the University of Birmingham highlighted that having multiple oral sex partners significantly increases the risk, with research dubbing the situation an "epidemic."

Although HPV is generally harmless and affects eight in ten people at some point, certain strains can cause cancer. The HPV vaccine, available for children aged 11 to 12, has proven over 80 per cent effective at reducing these cancer rates. Yet, vaccination uptake has dropped, with only 67.2 per cent of girls and 62.4 per cent of boys fully vaccinated in 2021/22.

Professor Ali Khurram from the University of Sheffield stressed the devastating impact of head and neck cancer, calling for increased awareness and action to address these alarming trends.

A founding population would require hundreds of humans, and AI may need to match couples based on genetic compatibility.

David Cullen, a professor of astrobiology at Cranfield University, highlighted the urgent need to address unanswered questions about sex and reproduction in space. He pointed to concerns about the effects of altered gravity on human development, noting the musculoskeletal impact from childhood through adolescence.

A staff member of UGMC, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “This is very strange; the boy is looking strong and in good shape, so we cannot understand why Dr. Fred Salawu appears to be shielding him from the police. It seems Dr. Salawu is being motivated by something else because this is very strange. It is just not fair to the girls who died and their families. Will this special treatment be extended to every person, or is it because his father has money and influence?”
