The new political administration in Ghana was not without some controversies as some key political figures got engaged in some controversial moments that sparked of discussions and became the talk of town.

“Legalization of Homosexuality in Ghana is bound to happen” – President Akufo-Addo

The president of Ghana in an interview with Aljazeera said that, he “think that it is something that is bound to happen".

“At the moment, I don’t feel, I don't see that in Ghana there is that strong current of opinion that will say this is something that we need you to deal with, It is not so far a matter which is on the agenda,” the president further stated in the interview.

Many individuals and organizations including the Christian Council criticized the president’s comments and asked that the government should out clear with its stance on the issue of homosexuality.

“NPP members are more Ghanaian than other” – George Ayisi-Boateng

Mr George Ayisi-Boateng, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa came under intense pressure to resign for his partisan comment. The high commissioner said he will prioritize members in the NPP and its tertiary education wing, Tertiary Students’ Confederacy Network (TESCON) in his dealings with Ghanaians as a High Commissioner. The High Commissioner who initially stood by his words later apologized and is still serving as a diplomat of the state.

“NPP members are pigs” – Former President Mahama

On the backlash of Mr. Ayisi Boateng’s partisan comment, former President John Mahama told NDC members during the unity walk on Sunday in Cape Coast, Central Region, “When they were looking for your votes, President Akufo-Addo said they shall open the opportunities of this country to all Ghanaians, irrespective of their party or ethnic affiliations. He came to power and now that the pigs are enjoying, they say some Ghanaians are more Ghanaian than others.” Many took the comments in its literal term and condemned the ex president. The comment was apparently an analogy from George Orwell’s Animal Farm and was to be taken figuratively.

“Former President Mahama is ignorant” – Vice President Bawumia

Former President Mahama went in hard again on the government when he addressed the cost of the new National Digital Property Addressing System. He accused the vice President of “embarrassing” President with a “419” digital addressing application which cost Ghana $2.5 million (GHS9.9m) when it already existed on mobile phones.

The Vice President in an immediate reply said, “For former president Mahama to claim that Ghana’s NDPAS and the accompanying GhanaPostGPS app is a 419 scam demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the system. We have been witnesses to 8 years of his governance as vice president and president and we know what 419 scams look like. We know a 419 scam when we see one and that unfortunately was the hallmark of the administration of former president Mahama.”

“Northerners are difficult and liars” – Former Deputy Member of Agric

Former Deputy Minister of Agriculture, William Agyapong Quaittoo caused an uproar when he made comments that sought to suggest that people from the three Northern regions are difficult and insincere. The Minister, who was responding to complaints from farmers that their farms have been destroyed by the fall armyworm appeared to suggest that their complaints were false. The minister later resigned for his comment.
