Ghanaian universities arrest and dismiss students for hacking to change grades

University of Ghana and University of Professional Studies have arrested and dismissed students who attempted a hack on their results database respectively.

The University of Ghana had the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) arrest 20 students for trying to hack the school’s academic records system.

Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, Vice Chancellor of the university revealed the students attempted to change their grades in the school’s record system named MIS WEB.

The professor, however, added the attempt was not successful and that the university has upgraded security measures and firewalls of the MIS WEB.

Another tertiary institution in Ghana, the University of Professional Studies (UPS) has also dismissed 22 students for undermining the school’s information system in a bid to ‘manipulate various grades in their favour’.

The university had an emergency meeting with its academic board ruling on Wednesday, February 15 that the students be let go.

In a statement released by the school, University of Professional Studies wrote:

“The Academic Board at its emergency meeting on Wednesday, 15 February 2017 took a decision to dismiss the twenty-two (22) under-listed students from the University with immediate effect.

The dismissed students were found culpable of involvement in various acts to undermine the University’s student information system in order to manipulate various grades in their favour.

The Academic Board took a serious view of this conduct considering the potential it has to damage the credibility of the University and therefore further resolved that seven of the dismissed students who refused to cooperate with the investigation process should have their photographs published alongside their names to serve as a deterrence.

All the twenty-two (22) are hereby requested to submit any property of the University including student’s ID card in their possession to the Registrar without any delay.

The decision of the University is without prejudice to any criminal investigation and prosecution being pursued by the law enforcement authorities.”
