We're not serious with our education - Franklin Cudjoe jabs Nana Addo

Franklin Cudjoe said the implementation of the double track system will eventually destroy the fabric of education system in the country.

He said the implementation of the double track system will eventually destroy the fabric of education system in the country.

In an interview on Accra-based Neat FM, he said "For me, I won’t take my child to any senior high school now, this is not any policy to be excited about, I think we are not being serious with our education in this country and that is not how to go about things."

The government has argued that the new system is expected to reduce class sizes and increase contact hours and address the growing number of students benefiting from the free SHS policy due to infrastructure deficit.

Franklin Cudjoe said the double track system will actually do more harm than good to the future of Ghanaian children and has vowed not to make his child be part of it.

Double tracking system

In a single-track system, students and staff are in school or vacation at the same time within an academic year.

But the double year-round system divides the entire student body and staff into two different tracks. So while one track is in school, the other is on vacation.

The rotation sequence will depend on the year-round calendar being used. In Ghana, the school calendar starts from September and ends in April with three different terms. The first term is from September to December, the second term starts in January and ends in April while the third term is from April/May to July.

Deputy Education Minister reacts

But the Deputy Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum disagreed with Franklin Cudjoe's position.

He, however, explained that the new system will help contain the surge in enrollment due to free SHS.

"It is a time-tested practice used around the world whenever there’s a surge in enrolment. That’s a stop-gap measure used around the world it is time-tested," he added.
