'You must be humble' - Mahama tells new EC boss

Charlotte Osei has been sworn in as the new EC chairperson

President John Mahama has advised the newly sworn in chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei to be humble and learn from the deputies and her predecessor Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan.

Mr. Mahama speaking at the swearing-in ceremony at the Flagstaff House, Tuesday, Mahama warned that “you are stepping into some very big shoes” hence “humility” is key to run a very successful Electoral Commission.

Mahama noted he has no slightest doubt the lawyer will succeed due to her “very solid credentials in both legal practice and public service.”

Mahama also described her appointment as “another milestone in our journey of democratic consolidation.”

He said Dr Afari Gyan, who he described as “a colossus when it comes to elections and electoral systems”, is leaving a footprint not only in Ghana, but the entire continent hence must be consolidated.

Mahama said: “While congratulating you on your appointment to what is a rather tough position, let me remind you with all humility that you are stepping into some very big shoes. Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan has proven over the last two decades that he is a colossus when it comes to elections and electoral systems.

“And has, despite whatever grievances we as politicians might have expressed against him, either in government or opposition distinguished himself creditably and has contributed immensely to the stability of our democracy.”
