ACEP doubtful about announced end of load shedding

The Power Ministry on Wednesday declared an end to the country's protracted three year load shedding excercise.

The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has raised questions on government's announcement that load shedding has come to an end.

Director of the Centre Mohammed Amin Adams said the announcement is rather hasty considering transmission and distribution losses which will affect the power sector.

"If you don't have sufficient reserve margins, apart from the problems associated with transmission and distribution, you will have problem associated with generation," he told Accra-based Asempa FM.

In a Statement, the Power Ministry said it "wishes to inform the public that its Load Shedding programme in respect of electricity supply has been brought to an end.

"The Ministry takes this opportunity to express its profound gratitude and appreciation to the entire citizenry and residents of Ghana for their forbearance and understanding during those difficult times.

"The Ministry and its Agencies wish to assure the public that it shall continue to pursue policies and programs to consolidate the gains so far made in the generation and transmission of Electricity for the country," the statement added.

But, Mohammed Amin Adams has insisted that the announcement was ""unnecessary, ill-informed and lacking technical astuteness".

The Power Minister Dr. Kwabena Donkor has come under a lot of pressure to resign this month December 2015 if the loadshedding doesn't end as he promised in the beginning of the year.

There have also been debates over what the minister actually promised, whether he promised to end power outages or planned loadshedding. For most, there is no difference between the two. This section of the public demanded the head of the Minister should the  power outages  continue into 2016. It is however unclear what the release of this statement means, that is, if Ghanaians are not going to experience power outages any longer.
