Bantama NPP MP aspirant denies dual citizenship tag

Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi on Tuesday, the parliamentary aspirant said he has an American permanent residence permit but he does not “hold a dual citizenship."

The New Patriotic Party parliamentary nominee for Bantama constituency in Kumasi, Mr Daniel Okyem Aboagye has rubbished claims that he holds dual citizenship.

According to him, he has never owed allegiance to any other country apart from Ghana and has therefore asked those making the allegations to provide evidence to the contrary.

He brought out printed copies of all his passports and resident permit which were collated on a board for public viewing to back his claims.

The Bantama aspiring MP said he was fully aware of the requirements of becoming an MP, and hence will not do anything to jeopardise his ambition.

He further said he was aware of what happened to the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mr Adamu Sakande, who was incarcerated for not denouncing his British citizenship on time before contesting and becoming an MP and hence will not do same.

There were rumours in Kumasi that Mr Aboagye held dual citizenship of Ghana and the United States of America (USA).

The sitting MP, Mr Henry Kwabena Kokofu who lost the primary to Mr Aboagye subsequently decided to contest the seat as an independent candidate.

Mr Kokofu has, however, rescinded his decision to go independent.
