Scrap free SHS if... - Lecturer tells gov't

The implementation of the free SHS has worsened the situation compelling students to sleep on the veranda and exposed to mosquitoes.

A lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, Kumasi Campus, Mr. Aaron Kumah has said "Government should quit this free policy and either choose to make all second circle institutions day or boarding completely."

Since the start of the free SHS, some schools have been going through some challenges when it comes to teaching materials and furniture for students to study with.

The infrastructure deficit is a major challenge associated with the implementation of the free policy.

The situation has compelled some school authorities to convert dining halls and in some cases uncompleted classroom blocks into dormitories, to accommodate students whilst others are forced to lie on the floor due to unavailable beds.

In some schools, a bed meant to accommodate one student now accommodate two or more students.

Mr. Aaron Kumah speaking on the development said the policy must be scrapped.

"The government can also not be pardoned for challenges like accommodation and classrooms," he said on Kumasi-based Abusua FM.
