Michael Osei, the man of trophies

The Kotoko coach hardly miss out on winning trophies

Osei, who played for Kumasi Asante Kotoko in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s hasn’t yet been handed a substantive coaching role at Kotoko, but he has already won three trophies for his idol club.

Michael Osei joined Kotoko in 2013 from New Edubiase United to assist Mas-ud Didi Dramani. He and his boss won the league title in the 2013-14 season and was tasked to lead the team in their FA Cup final in 2014 in absence of Didi Dramani who was on national team assignment to help scout for the Black Stars ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Michael Osei delivered the goods by beating Inter Allies 2-1 to give Kotoko a historic double of league and FA Cup, something that was missing in the enviable history of arguably the most successful club in the anal of Ghana domestic football.

David Duncan was appointed in 2015 to replace Didi Dramani, but Osei retained his position as the assistant of the club. During the pre-season of the 2015-16 season, Kotoko at a point took a decision to divide their team into two to enable them play an invitational tournament in Libya. The head coach Duncan went with the team to Libya and the other half was tasked to play in the GHALCA 8 tourney which was on going. Michael Osei was assigned the team that stayed behind to play the G-8 and he defied all expectations to beat Aduana Stars who had done the best of business during the pre-season to win the grand finale.

The former Ashgold and Hearts of Oak coach, David Duncan was asked to step aside, after match day 6, following a poor start to the season that rocked the club at the bottom of the league and Michael Osei was named the interim coach of the club.
