Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez are working toward adding another striker to the team this summer, and ultimately want more from the attack. But based off what was seen against Tottenham this past Sunday, there already is a potent weapon on the wing for the Magpies.
The winger can be a creative leader for the squad.
Despite overall struggles in the final third versus Spurs, Christian Atsu’s work on the left flank was outstanding and difficult for the opposition to keep up with at times.
The Ghanaian international created space and was able to leave defenders trailing behind with his incredible pace.
The 25-year-old’s loan deal was made permanent soon after last season ended, and with good reason. Atsu made a wonderful impression on Benitez and has shown that he can be effective in a variety of ways.
A clear plan moving forward
The potential is there for Atsu to be the focus of the attack, but there are aspects of his game that need to improve in order to do so. Despite his excellent runs in the opposing half, he was unable to find passes into the penalty area for Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez.
For Atsu to reach another level during the current campaign, he must be able to continue his work out wide and also set up team-mates for success. He is certainly capable, as he displayed last term in the Championship.
But the Premier League is a new challenge entirely, and in order to find success that area must be modified.
With Jonjo Shelvey suspended and several defenders out injured, Atsu’s importance over the next few weeks will be even greater as the Magpies fight for vital points.
The search for a striker continues at Newcastle United. However, their attack may also be able to flow through Christian Atsu while that search takes place.
