Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hanna S. Tetteh (MP), received the African Gender Award for Ghana at the Kigali Summit of the African Union.
The African Gender Scorecard, which measures the performance of gender equality and women’s empowerment, is being sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the African Development Bank.
Ghana has over the years introduced some social intervention programmes to advance the economic rights of women.
Many women have already benefited from small loans and other policies such as the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme which have helped cushion them.
Parliament is also expected to approve the Affirmative Action Bill to enhance gender equality and empowerment of women.
