Woman bizarrely deaf to men’s voices, but hears every other sound perfectly

A report by Metro.co.uk suggests that the woman simply identified as Chen is able to hear women’s voices and any other sound, but when a man speaks she is unable to hear.

She is reported as saying to doctors that the night before she visited the hospital, she could hear ringing in her ears.

She went to sleep, thinking that having a rest might remedy the situation. However, unfortunately, she woke up only to realise that she could not hear her boyfriend’s voice as he tried to speak to her.

Fearing that she might be deaf, she quickly rushed to Qianpu Hospital, in the city of Xiamen, East China, and to her surprise, she could hear the voice of the female who attended to her.

“She was able to hear me when I spoke to her, but when a young male patient walked in, she couldn’t hear him at all,” Ear, nose and throat specialist Lin Xiaoqing is quoted as having said as she diagnosed Chen of “low-frequency hearing loss”.

Doctor Lin Xiaoqing’s diagnosis was informed by the patient’s explanation that she had been working late and hardly had enough sleep, causing her a lot of stress recently.

The health specialist explained that fatigue and the added stress of long days may have contributed to the condition, which caused a loss of sensitivity to deeper sounds, and which only allowed her to hear sharper, higher-frequency sounds – such as the voices of women, Metro.co.uk reported.

The lesson here is to have sufficient rest and sleep and also reduce your workload in order to be in good health.
