All electric trains now run on wind power in the Netherlands

The northern European country met the target to ensure that all their electric trains run on wind power with one year to spare.

All electric trains in the Netherlands are now totally powered by wind energy, to become the first of its kind in the world.

said Ton Boon, the spokesperson of Dutch train operators NS.

The target was met following an increased establishment of the number of wind farms across the Netherlands.

According to the company, its trains operate about 5,500 trips carrying about 600,000 passengers daily around the country.

The Netherlands like much of Europe is favourable towards the reduction of greenhouse gases. The use of bikes is very much encouraged as a mode of transport in Dutch cities.
