In the international art community, the hype around Leipzig continues at a steady pace, with its thriving arts scene earning it the “new Berlin” tag.

This year, the city will be celebrating 1000 years of existence, with events running all through the year, so that’s a lot reasons to visit.

Among the highlights of the celebration is a week-long festival from 31 May, with street theatre and music events, followed by Bachfest from 12-21 June and open-air concerts by the Gewandhaus Orchestra from 10 July.

A Paul Klee retrospective exhibition will also be holding at the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts from 1 March. The Spinnerei, a former cotton mill that is now housing an enclave of artist’s studios, will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary with open house showings in January, May and September.

As for lodging and accommodation, the Meisterzimmer is recommended. It offers self-catering rooms surrounded by artists’ studios, all from 75 Euros a night.
