Meet Michael Morand

TEDxAccra 2015 will take place on April 11 at the National Theatre from 7am to 7pm. It is expected to be the biggest TEDx event in Ghana to date. The theme for this year is “The Next Chapter”.

Michael Morand

Michael Morand is deputy chief communications officer for his alma mater, Yale University, a school that aims to inspire the minds that inspire the world. A digital griot, he’s helped Yale grow its global social media audience exponentially. Yale fosters connection, creativity, and innovation among cultures and across disciplines.

Michael is glad his work has led him to Ghana, the most hospitable nation on earth, six times. He accurately predicted the 2014 Ghana-USA World Cup outcome at Adabraka’s Kenkey Boutique in May, though he cheered the Black Stars on stateside in June, as Twitter and Jayso can attest. He’d like more Schweppes Bitter Lemon in the US and more iced French Roast coffee in Ghana. Efya, Paapa, and M.Anifest top his iTunes playlist. Michael believes the world wins when the creativity of Ghana’s young people can flourish. He counts his Ghanaian friends and colleagues among life’s greatest blessings

Why should you listen to him:

My friends in Ghana and its diaspora say I’ve occasionally shown them things in Ghana they didn’t know well. I think that’s overblown – but it highlights a truth: outsiders sometimes help you see your strengths and assets in a fresh way. My own country has its challenges and share of faults over time and in our time – but our liberal arts universities are strength worth sharing with the world. Such places encourage creativity and allow us to take the inheritance we have received from our fathers and mothers, possess it anew, and make it our own.

Quotes from Michael:

I realize I may know very little, personally, but I do know an awfully large number of people in many different places. In a networked world, being curious and finding out who and what to ask is a very strong advantage. I’m often more enthusiastic about what you are doing than you are yourself!
