Giacomo Nizzolo's first Giro d'Italia stage win has been taken away from the Trek-Segafredo rider after he was disqualified.
Giro stage winner Nizzolo disqualified
Trek-Segafredo hit out after rider Giacomo Nizzolo was stripped of his first ever Giro d'Italia stage win in the event's closing section.
Nizzolo romped home with a brilliant sprint finish in front of huge Turin crowds in the closing stage of the Giro, which was won for the second time by the 2013 champion Vincenzo Nibali (Astana).
But Nizzolo was then disqualified for an illegal sprint after he was deemed to have blocked off Lampre-Merida's Sacha Modolo, much to the fury of Trek-Segafredo.
"We have received the news that Giacomo Nizzolo has been relegated for an illegal sprint," Trek-Segafredo wrote on Twitter.
"He did not impede anyone from winning. But rules are rules. In our hearts we know who was the fastest in stage 21 at the 2016 Giro."
German rider Nikias Arndt (Giant-Alpecin) has been named the winner of the closing stage of the Giro in place of Nizzolo.
