MoFA to introduce conservation agric technology

The technologies will help farmers to conserve soil moisture, especially in areas where there is minimum tillage of the soil.

"Because of climate change, what the ministry is essentially doing is introducing farmers to technologies that will help them conserve the soil moisture  , particularly where there is minimum tillage of the soil," Brong Ahafo Regional Director of MoFA, Dr. Cyrial Quist said, he was quoted by the Business and Financial Times as saying.

He said farmers are being taught innovative measures such as bounding, planting of vertebra grass to regulate the flow of water, planting pits, discouraging bush burning, and promoting the application of weedicides to preserve water and soil nutirents.

According to him, the ministry is also promoting the growing of trees to change the change the macro-environment, and introduce farmers to the use of composts under a project known as "The Adaptation of Agro Ecosystem to Climate Chnage."

"It is really helping the farmers in the sense that it improves the soil structure, retains moisture and provides nutrients for the crops," Dr. Quist added.

He said drought resistant seed varieties have been introduced to farmers in areas like Atebubu-Amantin, Pru, Nkoranza, Kintampo South, Wenchi and Sene West.
