Human Resource lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Amponsah- Tawiah is urging Ghanaians not to concentrate on the quantity and monetary values of what the doctors are demanding as condition of service.

In an exclusive interview with pulse.com.gh, the labour expert said “ That is not the point. The point is these doctors deserve their conditions of service. Its not about the quantities.”

A leaked document outlining the official demands of members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) shows that the Association wants among other things, clothing and fuel allowances as high as 100 gallons a month for the highest ranked doctors , to 20 gallons for the lowest ranked.
Dr. Amponsah- Tawiah also labelled comments by the President in relation to the Ghana Medical Association’s over better conditions of service.

Dr. Amponsah- Tawiah said modern negotiations are not done in an adversarial manner. “Government must strive for a win- win situation. The president’s posture must be to explain the economic situation to the doctors, and not to address it in the manner in which he did”
The labor expert also bemoaned the forum through which the president decided to address the situation. The president declared government’s unwillingness to grant the demands of the doctors when he was addressing a gathering at the National Association of midwives on Wednesday.
When asked about the president’s comments, the Labour expert said “ the president was being frank when he said the demands are untenable. I would not have taken that posture though. Negotiations are not done with emotions. In negotiations, When emotions go through the door, reasoning goes through the window.”
