Marcel Desailly wins Stars Sixes World Cup with France

The France football legend was part of former Les Bleus players who won the legends tournament on Sunday.

Desailly was born in Ghana, to Ghanaian parents, but moved to France at a very tender where he started his football career.

The 48-year-old won the Uefa Champions League with Marseille in a glittering club career, and was also a member of the golden generation of French players who won back-to-back European titles as well as the World Cup.

Despite retiring from active football over a decade ago, the former Chelsea defender added another trophy to his cabinet after lifting the Star Sixes World Cup with France.

The Star Sixes World Cup is a tournament for retired international players, with countries playing for the right to be called world champions.

The competition allows each team to present 10 squad players, of which six are eligible to start on the field.

This year’s tournament is the first of its kind and it was hosted at the O2 Arena in London, with the likes of Brazil, Germany and Nigeria joining nine other countries to compete.

France beat Denmark 2-1 in the final to emerge winners of the legends tournament, with goals from Ludovic Giuly and Youri Djorkaeff settling the tie.

Desailly was ever-present in the France team – captained by Robert Pires – as Les Bleus won the trophy.

Star names such as Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Michael Ballack, Carles Puyol, Michael Solgado and Jay-Jay Ockocha all graced the tournament to represent their respective nations.

Meanwhile Spain defeated Brazil 11-3 to clinch third-place.
