United won just six away games last season and Van Gaal has urged his players to improve their away form.
Van Gaal is of the opinion that his new players will need time to blend in after a lacklustre narrow win over Spurs.
"The key for success this season is improving away matches. We were one of the best last season at home, third in the league," the Dutch manager said ahead of EPL's first Friday night fixture.
"I wanted to create a fortress at Old Trafford. We did that but away we have to improve and we can improve because last year we were not good.

"It is also possible for Arsenal and Chelsea to recover the points because we will lose games this season."
