Bukom Banku broke the internet in 2017 for the wrong reason though, after he lost his first bout. He was beaten for the very first time in his professional boxing career by Bastie Samir in October at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

Bastie who had sparred for Floyd Mayweather in the past defied all odds to knock out fans favourite Banku in round 7.

The defeat went viral with videos of a section of the crowd celebrating the fall of the troublesome boxer.

Boxing plays second fiddle to football in Ghana, so one may ask why the most popular sports failed to produce an individual in the most searched sports persons on google for 2017.

It is no surprise that football which is the most popular sports in Ghana didn’t have any of its stars appearing in the top ten google trends for the year 2017, since the Black Stars, which is the flagship national football team in the country was awful.

The senior male national football team of Ghana could only manage a fourth place finish in the African Nations Championship held in Gabon.

And worse, of all the Black Stars couldn’t qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Russia. This in a way made the big players in the Black Stars unpopular.
