Third seed Mladenovic comfortably saw off Yaroslava Shvedova in round one, but was faced with a sterner test by the Russian qualifier – ranked 254th in the world – on Wednesday.

After staving off five break points to take a 5-3 lead in the first set, the Frenchwoman lost four straight games to fall behind in the match.

Unperturbed, Mladenovic took just 32 minutes to draw level and showed great steel to see out the victory from 4-4 with a break of serve in the final game.

Awaiting the world number 32 in the quarter-finals is Elise Mertens, who overcame Aleksandra Krunic 6-4 7-6 (7-3).
