Facing a tricky opening opponent in Adrian Mannarino, a player just 15 places below him in the ATP rankings, Seppi was beaten 6-4 6-4 in his first grass-court outing of the season.

Mannarino will now face Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 after the Russian qualifier sprung a shock with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Horacio Zeballos.

Sela came through a gruelling battle with Dennis Novikov, eventually winning 7-5 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-5) after two hours and 18 minutes.

Dutch wildcard Igor Sijsling eased through to a meeting with third seed Ivo Karlovic by beating Inigo Cervantes in straight sets, but Robin Haase - a semi-finalist on home soil last year - was eliminated by Gilles Muller.

The remaining first-round winners on Tuesday were Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who will play Muller in round two, and Tatsuma Ito, the next opponent for fifth seed Sam Querrey.
