WTA Jiangxi Open: Liu Fangzhou beats Donna Vekic

Liu Fangzhou was a runner-up at the WTA Jiangxi Open in 2014 and kicked off this year's title bid with an impressive win.

Fourth seed Donna Vekic fell to a first-round loss against home hope Liu Fangzhou at the WTA Jiangxi Open on Tuesday.

Vekic was beaten 6-2 6-2 by the 2014 runner-up in Nanchang, with Liu recovering brilliantly from dropping her serve in the opening game.

In other first-round clashes, sixth seed Vania King beat Storm Sanders, wildcard Lu Jia-jing overcame Daniela Hantuchova and Lu Jing-jing was beaten by Lin Zhu.

Also through to the second round are Miyu Kato, third seed Francesca Schiavone and qualifier Zhang Ying.

Kurumi Nara, seeded second, won the first set against Tereza Mrdeza 6-3 but was trailing 2-3 in the second when rain interrupted the match, forcing it to be postponed until Wednesday.
