Maiden Women In Tourism summit brings a much-needed female voice to grow tourism

Women in Tourism Summit is a platform that aims to serve as a strategic driver to promote gender equality and women empowerment.

According to the organisers, Women in Tourism Summit is a platform that aims to serve as a strategic driver to promote gender equality and women empowerment.

The summit was organised to highlight the challenges and opportunities that exist for female tourism personnel in Ghana.

Currently, women are under-represented in the tourism sector as with other key developmental sectors in Ghana. According to United Nation World Tourism Organization, women make up the majority of the tourism workforce in the most region of the world and yet they are concentrated in the lowest paid and the lowest status job in tourism.

Some personalities believe that the reason for this is that many women especially are not passionate about the business aspect of tourism and thus do not take active participation in it.

At the summit, most of the speakers made a case for women empowerment in the tourism landscape.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs Catherine Afeku said the summit will promote women's economic empowerment in tourism through a partnership with the key stakeholders across the entire travel and tourism and hospitality value chains.

Speakers for the event were Mrs Catherine Afeku, Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture; Madam Otiko Afisah Djaba, Minister for Gender and Children Affairs; Mr Akwasi Agyeman, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority; Nancy Sam Quartey, President of Women In Tourism, Ghana; Sella Fubara-Obinwa, International Operations, Dubai Tourism (Africa Market) and Assia Riccio-Smith, Founder, Evolving Women.
