The Private Enterprise Federation (PEF) of Ghana has expressed worry over the continuous rise in cost of power in the country.

The Chief Executive Officer of PEF, Nana Osei Bonsu said Ghana’s industrial sector will collapse if the country does not focus on reducing the cost of power for businesses to work with.

“One of the main concerns of the private sector is energy. Not just the availability but the cost as well… The water bodies that go into the sea, why can’t we redirect it to Akosombo [dam]?” he questioned.

“A lot of businesses are collapsing because of the cost of energy; if they don’t pay, the power is cut, and when they pay they run into serious debt”, he told Accra-based Class FM.

He further argued that the Akosombo dam would need re-engineering to ensure that the required volume of water for generating hydroelectric power is always available.

This, he said, will prevent frequent power cuts and will also supplement power from thermal sources which is expensive.

Nana Osei Bonsu further advised the government to embrace renewable sources of energy to create a mix that will reduce the cost of power.

“The efficiency and the mix [are important]. Some places have 35 per cent of energy mix made up of renewables. We have the sun, how about solar and why are we not tapping into it? How about the tonnes of garbage that fill our streets and waterways. Wind and others are also available,” he  said.
