The transport fares will take effect today, Thursday, April 6, 2017.

A release from the Road Transport Operators said the increment is in line with the administrative instrument on public transport fares.

The transport operators say the increase became necessary following the high cost of fuel.

The new fares cover transport operations involving inter-city (long distances), intra-city (Trotro) and cabs.

Petrol prices has since gone up  in 2017. Petrol which was increased from GH¢19.7 to GH¢24 in March 2017 and has since been increased in April.

Unlike previous times when commercial drivers arbitrarily increase fares immediately fuel prices go up, there now appears to be sanity.

Stakeholders in the transport sector have improved dialogue to agree on the fare increases.

The upward review of fares is the first in 2017. This review comes at a time when the government has reduced the Special petroleum tax rate from 17.5 percent to 15 percent.
