Interior Minister summoned to parliament over killing of 2 robbers by police

The two were shot after they allegedly attempted escaping lawful arrest but residents suspect foul play.

Parliament has summoned the Minister of Interior Ambrose Dery to appear before it to answer questions regarding the shooting and killing of two suspected armed robbers in the Ashanti Region by the police.

The two - Lukeman Mohammed and Awudu Osman – were shot on Thursday, November 9, after they allegedly attempted escaping lawful arrest.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti regional police command, ASP Juliana Obeng said the suspects confessed to the police that they had arms hidden in an uncompleted storey building at Sepe, a suburb of Kumasi.

She said that the two tried escaping while leading officers trace a cache of arms.

"Whilst the search was ongoing, the two suspects who were in separate handcuffs jumped from a one-storey building to escape from the police. They were, however, chased and fired at to immobilise them from escaping, but suspect Awudu Osman died instantly, while suspect Lukeman Mohammed was pronounced dead on arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital,” ASP Obeng explained.

Tension is, however, heightening in Aboabo following the incident as the family of the deceased and other residents suspect foul play.

On the floor of parliament on Friday, the Minority Chief Whip, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka said he was disappointed in the manner in which the two were suspects were gunned down by the police.

The Speaker, Prof Mike Oquaye subsequently asked the Minister for the Interior to appear before the House on or before 22 November to brief parliament on the circumstances that led to the death of the two suspects.
