They wailed uncontrollably upon seeing the first gentleman in Somanya, where the university will be located with affiliate campuses in other towns in the region. The Eastern Region is the last region to have a public university on its soil.

The Eastern University was one of the president’s main campaign promises in his electoral success in 2012 and was hoping that his many infrastructural achievements would win Ghanaians over instead of the economic challenges Ghanaian families and businesses have faced under his administration.

The governing National Democratic Congress lost emphatically in this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections. The results meant that John Mahama is the first president to be voted out of office after serving just one four-year term.
