The dramatic penalty miss by Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan in the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Uruguay seems to be haunting him even after eight years since the incident happened
Ghana were on brink of making history as the first African nation to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup.
Luis Suarez, however, stopped Dominic Adiyeah’s header from entering the net with his hands and Asamoah Gyan wasted the resultant penalty with the last kick of the game in extra time.
In a Twitter video, the former Sunderland striker recounts how he has to constantly fight off the disappointment he felt for failing the whole continent.
“I never shoot that high. It hit the post. I was like ‘oh God!’ The whole of Africa was in my head. We were the only hope in Africa, I blew it. I blew it away in just a twinkle of an eye. That is one of the saddest moments [in my life].
“Sometimes I blame myself, but sometimes I just feel life goes on. I had a great World Cup, and everybody appreciated what I did in the World Cup despite that penalty [miss]. Sometimes I assess things and I am okay. Life goes on,” he said in the video.
