About 45,000 Zulu maidens participated in this year’s Annual Reed Dance, known as Umkhosi Womhlanga in Zulu Kingdom, South Africa.
After going through virginity testing in their various districts, the girls were brought to the Zulu King’s palace to undergo the final testing followed by the Reed Dance.

The maidens are made to undergo the “ritual” test every year to ensure that they are virgins, ostensibly to prevent immorality among the youth.

Just like every other year, the eventful ritual and virginity testing took place at Enyokeni, palace of King Goodwill Zwelithini. The event is reminiscent of the Puberty rights and others that are celebrated in Ghana.
According to reports, the young girls in their thousands underwent virginity test in their districts to affirm their purity before Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini ahead of the Annual Reed Dance.

The rite took place between September 8 and 10 in Nongoma, Zulu kingdom in South Africa.
This year’s Reed Dance also known as Umkhosi Womhlanga‚ took take place from September 8 to 10.
