James Pattinson is feeling confident following an impressive showing in Australia's first Test against West Indies this month.

The hosts won by an innings and 212 runs and, although Pattinson failed to take a wicket from 15 overs bowled in the first innings, when the Windies took to the crease for a second time, he produced a formidable display to make up for the absence of the injured Mitchell Starc.

While it took him a while to get going, the right-arm quick hopes to produce another strong showing when the second Test begins in Melbourne on Saturday.

"It was almost like my debut repeat again. It sort of didn't go to plan in the first innings and then managed to get five [wickets]," Pattinson said.

"So it does give you a lot of confidence and going into this I'm really excited. I've probably got the nerves out the say now, so I'm pretty relaxed now.

"I was probably a bit inconsistent with my pace down at Hobart. It was quite cold and took a while to warm up.

"But I'm hoping to improve that with a bit of rhythm. The more games I play, the more comfortable I feel. I'm sure that will improve naturally."

Pattinson's international career has been hampered by a string of injuries, including two back problems that have seen him remodel his action.

However, he believes he has reached a point where he is bowling comfortably and does not need to focus on his movement so heavily.

"It's probably a good thing that I feel like I'm sort of getting back to probably feeling really comfortable - feeling like I used to bowl," he said.

"Actually, my action has just stayed the same and I'm somewhere in between being really side on and front on.

"It's basically second nature to me now. That's probably a big bonus for me. Not having to run in and think about my actions."
