Angels' Albert Pujols undergoes foot surgery, out 4-5 months

Albert Pujols could be back on the field in time for opening day.

The Los Angeles Angels first baseman and designated hitter underwent surgery to repair the planter plate in his right foot last week.

But Pujols is expected to resume full baseball activities sometime in March, the team announced on Monday.

"The surgery, as expected, went very well," general manager Billy Eppler said in a statement.

"Albert will continue rehabbing in the Kansas City area throughout the winter and is expected to resume full baseball activities in four-and-a-half months."

The procedure was Pujols' second off-season surgery in three years.

He initially injured his foot in late August and spent September hampered by the problem.

Unable to play first base, he was limited to designated hitter duty during the final month of the season.

Pujols hit 40 home runs last season for the seventh time in his career, adding 95 RBIs in 157 games played.
