The race for the presidential candidate slot of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is becoming increasingly competitive as a new poll predicts that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, will defeat former Vice President and 2024 Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming presidential primaries with 53.1% of the vote.

According to the Phase Two survey conducted by Sanity Africa, a Pan-African civil society organisation, and released in October 2025, Agyapong has strengthened his position as the frontrunner among NPP delegates across the country.

The findings indicate a 1.7 percentage point increase in his support since the Phase One report was released in July, underscoring his growing influence within the party.

Dr Bawumia follows with 39.0%, marking a 3.2-point decline from the previous survey. Other contenders include Dr Bryan Acheampong with 5.0% (up by 1.9 points), Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum with 2.0% (down by 1.0 point), and Ing. Kwabena Agyepong with 0.9% (up from 0.3%).

The nationwide poll, conducted between July and October 2025, sampled 15,000 NPP delegates from an estimated 218,000 in the party’s expanded voter album across all 276 constituencies. It recorded a 99% confidence level and a ±5% margin of error.

Regionally, Kennedy Agyapong leads in 10 of Ghana’s 16 regions, including the Ashanti (54.8%), Central (69.0%), and Eastern (54.8%) regions, which are considered strongholds of the NPP. Dr Bawumia, however, maintains control in six regions, especially in the north, including North East (70.0%) and Upper West (60.2%).

The report noted tight contests in Bono East, Savannah, and Upper East, where margins remain narrow. Dr Bawumia has strengthened his dominance in the North East Region, increasing from 51.6% to 70.0%, while Agyapong has made significant gains in the Volta (50.8%) and Bono (53.0%) regions.

Dr Bryan Acheampong also recorded improved support in his home region, Eastern, rising to 21.7%.

Sanity Africa observed that these regional shifts reflect evolving delegate preferences influenced by campaign strategies, regional sentiments, and candidate engagement. The organisation concluded that Kennedy Agyapong currently holds the upper hand and could emerge as the NPP’s presidential candidate if the trend continues.
