NHL committee recommends changes for video review, undecided on overtime
The NHL and National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) committee recommended the implementation of the coach's challenge and face-off changes but remains undecided on overtime changes, the league announced on Thursday.
Among the changes, the committee suggested that the league adopt a coach's challenge for expanded video review in addition to alterations to its face-off rule. The committee also discussed changing the NHL's overtime format from its current 4-on-4 to a form of 3-on-3, but failed to reach a consensus.
A decision regarding overtime changes is expected by the end of the month.
"The NHLPA and NHL will continue discussions in the coming weeks on potential changes with the intention for the committee to make a decision on overtime later this month," read a statement released jointly by the NHL and NHLPA.
The NHL was represented by Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider and general managers David Poile (Nashville Predators), Ken Holland (Detroit Red Wings), Don Maloney (Arizona Coyotes) and Peter Chiarelli (Edmonton Oilers).
The NHLPA was represented by Michael Cammalleri (New Jersey Devils), Cory Schneider (New Jersey Devils), Kevin Shattenkirk (St Louis Blues) and Daniel Winnik (Pittsburgh Penguins). David Backes (St Louis Blues) was unable to attend.
Any rule changes proposed by the committee must be approved by the NHLPA's Executive Board and the NHL's Board of Governors.
