The 31-year-old striker took a tour of Villa's Bodymoor Heath training HQ on Tuesday and had the first stages of his medical with an announcement possible in the next 24 hours.

Sherwood made Adebayor his No 1 target to replace Christian Benteke but worried his £100,000-per-week wages and Tottenham's £5million price tag would prove beyond Villa's finances

However, with Spurs eager to offload the Togo international, a loan deal with Villa picking up his salary but not paying a fee has been struck. Villa could make the move permanent once Adebayor is out of contract next summer.

His arrival follows that of £8.5m Ghana striker Jordan Ayew and the two could form a partnership. Blackburn Rovers centre-forward Rudy Gestede remains an option as Sherwood looks to boost his side's goal threat.

Adebayor, who has endured family problems, formed a productive relationship with Sherwood at Tottenham at the end of the 2013-14 season, scoring 14 goals.

Sherwood made his seventh summer signing on Tuesday by completing the transfer of Spanish defender Jose Angel Crespo for a fee believed to be around £500,000.
