Critically injured fireman to be flown to Accra

The fire officer was one of the first respondents to the scene of the gas explosion which happened on Tuesday morning in the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi in the west of the country.

A critically injured Ghana National Fire Service personnel is set to be flown to Accra from Takoradi to receive medical treatment.

Over 100 people have been injured in the blast which occurred at the Ghonco Chinese company at about 7:10 am.

The reports suggest that personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were working on solving a fault on a tanker which was discharging gas close to the Total filling station on the main Takoradi Highway.

However, the tanker that was receiving the gas exploded in the process. This left all five service men injured.

The second tanker also exploded after some time. This left some road users injured including some students at a nearby school and employees of a metro mass depot.

Many of the injured have been taken to the main hospital in the city, the Effia Nkwanta Hospital. The fire has since been put out.
