SHS candidates to write WASSCE in April

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has agreed to start the

Head of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), Rev. Samuel Ollennu said the move will guarantee that the nine terms allocated to teaching and learning in second cycle schools are fully exhausted by students before the examination.

He said "We are here to sanitize you about the forthcoming examination, which this time around is not starting February but on April 3. Formerly, we were going to start in February but the government appealed to us not to."

He noted that the SHS syllabus was for nine terms but because of delays in placement of students into SHS, only six terms were covered and, therefore, making it difficult for both teachers and students to complete the entire syllabus.

This, he said, often adversely affected students' performances at WASSCE.

In November 2017, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Education, has said WASSCE candidates would write the examination early with oral and practical examinations, so that teachers could cover the syllabus within nine terms.

"So we will make sure the nine terms were filled and improve the learning outcomes and record good performances," he added.
