Former President Jerry Rawlings has called for thorough investigations into the Goil filling station fire that has so far claimed more than 100 lives.
"It is a sad incident" - Rawlings
Former President Rawlings has described the circle disaster as a sad incident adding that we must seek to avoid such occurrences.
The former military leader who visited the scene Thursday morning said the circumstances surrounding the incident must be probed to its logical conclusion.
“We must understand into details the fire safety measures that were put in place by the management of the station.
“ It’s a sad incident and we must seek to avoid such occurrences but we must know exactly what could have been done to avoid incidents like these,” he said.
The heavy downpour in the capital rendered several places flooded and also led to power outages in several communities. Reports suggest that the fire service personnel struggled to fight the inferno last night. Officially, it is unclear what sparked the blaze at the service station.
Pulse.com.gh has learnt that the Fire service has been able to put out the fire and officers from the police and the military are at the scene to ensure calm.
It is not clear what started the fire that completely destroyed the filling station next to the GCB Bank Circle Tower branch, and also burnt several houses and shops, but eyewitnesses suspect fuel-laden floods could have imported the fire which trapped many who had sought refuge from torrential rains that cut off several communities from major roads.
