President Jammeh conceded defeat earlier in December when he lost the elections to opposition leader Adama Barrow. However, on December 9, 2016 he announced that he had changed his mind.
President Jammeh conceded defeat earlier in December when he lost the elections to opposition leader Adama Barrow. However, on December 9, 2016 he announced that he had changed his mind.
He annulled the results and called for fresh elections; which has led to outcry from the opposition and international world.

The regional body, ECOWAS has since then sent the presidents of the four English speaking West African countries (led by Liberia's Ellen Sirleaf) to mediate Jammeh’s exit.
His reluctance to leave office contradicts the posture taken by John Mahama who has graciously accepted his electoral loss to the opposition New Patriotic Party.
